Preparatory meeting for merged area symposium led by Chairman ASPIRE-KP

Aspire-KP, a platform dedicated to research on public policy and sustainable advocacy, convened a preparatory meeting to finalize arrangements for the upcoming “Aspire-KP Symposium on Issues in Merged Areas.” The symposium, set for September 29, 2024, in Peshawar, aims to revisit the integration of FATA into Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, focusing on the challenges and opportunities in the region since the 2015 process of merging began.

During the meeting, prominent journalists, academics, and legal professionals offered their insights to help shape the symposium’s agenda. Mr. Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, who was the Prime Minister of Pakistan during the merger, will be a key participant, providing firsthand perspectives on the integration process.

Participants highlighted a range of critical issues, from the region’s economic potential to the need for addressing local governance, justice system reforms, and land rights disputes. Several experts emphasized the importance of empowering local governments, enhancing youth skills, and fostering sustainable development through collaboration with civil society and development partners.

The meeting underscored the significance of addressing the unique challenges of the merged areas, particularly the displaced populations, and ensuring that the voices of women and marginalized groups are heard. These discussions will shape the recommendations Aspire-KP intends to present to decision-makers during the symposium.

Aspire-KP remains committed to fostering dialogue, gathering diverse perspectives, and generating actionable solutions that promote peace and development in the merged areas.
