Roundtable on Pak-Afghan Tensions & their Implications on the Region Organized by ASPIRE-KP

PESHAWAR: Advocacy for Sustainable Policy and Implementation Reforms (Aspire-KP) convened a high-level roundtable on “Pakistan–Afghanistan Tensions and Their Regional Implications,” bringing together seasoned Afghanologists, academics, and civil society leaders. Chaired by Mohammad Shehzad Arbab with context provided by Dr. Qibla Ayaz and recommendations synthesized by Hifz ur Rahman, the forum called for de-escalation through dialogue, insulating bilateral commerce at Torkham from political disputes, reforming border and visa procedures, and ensuring dignity in refugee policy.
  • Document / Report Type: Event insights and policy proceedings summary report (with full report download available on the Aspire-KP portal).

  • Core Purpose: To provide an analytical, de-escalatory policy blueprint for regional stability following heightened cross-border friction between Pakistan and Afghanistan in late 2025.

  • Institutional Role: Authored and published under the banner of Aspire-KP (Advocacy for Sustainable Policy and Implementation Reforms, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) as part of its ongoing mandate to mobilize provincial intellectual capital, bridge scholarly analysis with government decision-making, and promote evidence-informed regional diplomacy.

  • Key Takeaway of the Publication: Confrontation and border closures inflict severe socio-economic damage on border communities and transit logistics without resolving security issues. Lasting stability requires insulating economic corridors from diplomatic spats, reforming cross-border movement, and anchoring policy in multi-stakeholder dialogue and mutual historical understanding.
